70 ”Crystal” WR K7070/70

This is a 2’6” gauge battery locomotive. It was supplied new to the Winnington Works of Brunner Mond (part of the giant I.C.I. organisation) and worked at the Crystal Plant. This plant produced soda crystals; highly alkaline chemicals were placed into settling tanks, known as ”pans”, and the crystals precipitated into these. The crystals were shovelled into wagons, which these locos then hauled to a tipping point, from where the soda crystals went for further use in the plant. The loco came to the MRT collection on 20/8/1999
