These were originally used where a railway was impractical, Like on smaller contracts, where a railway may be too expensive. In most cases, these replaced narrow gauge railways in the long term, however, in the past some were used in conjunction with narrow gauge railways, as is still at places like Bord Na Mona in Ireland.
